A - Core Requirements and Reporting

What are the minimum Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements?

All practising members of the Law Society of New Brunswick, whether working full-time or part-time, must complete, report, and certify a minimum of twelve (12) hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in each calendar year (January 1 to December 31).

The required 12 hours must include:
   
      • At least two (2) hours in Professional Responsibility and Ethics
         (see Appendix A for a description of qualifying topics and examples); and
     
      • At least ten (10) additional hours of qualifying CPD, which may include:
             
                              ○ additional Professional Responsibility and Ethics hours; and/or

                              ○ hours in one or more of the following categories (see Appendix B for                                               qualifying topics and activities):

                                                          • Substantive Law
                                                          • Procedural Law
                                                          • Lawyering Skills

Do I have to report my CPD activities to the Law Society?

Yes. All practising members must report their CPD activities by December 31 of each year.

Reporting is completed through the member portal by submitting the Report CPD Hours form.

How do I calculate and report my CPD hours?

Members must report the actual number of hours devoted to each CPD activity. When calculating hours, exclude any time allocated to breaks, introductions, marketing content, or other non-educational segments.

How to report your CPD hours:

        • Log in to the member portal.
        • From the Home page, click “Fill in” or “Update” next to Report CPD Hours.
        • Complete all required fields in the reporting form.
        • Click Submit.

You can review your submitted information at any time by visiting the CPD Summary page.
