Discipline Cases

Discipline

Cases

This section lists all complaints that have been referred to the Discipline Committee for a public hearing. The Discipline Committee is governed by Part 10 Discipline and Competence of the Law Society Act, 1996.

  • Current cases are listed in the top part of the page. This includes hearings that are ongoing.
  • All public hearings past and present are listed in the second half of the page.
  • For information about which cases are public and which are not, please read our Publication Policies regarding disciplinary matters.
  • The information listed on this page does not include the lawyer's status or contact details. If you want to find out about a lawyer's status or address, please consult our Lawyer Search. The directory will tell you if the lawyer has a practice restriction or limited practice, even if the reason why is not public.

FORMAT CHANGES:  as of March 28, 2014, all cases are now listed in alphabetical order according to the lawyer's family name.  In addition, this page is now updated as required.  It is no longer updated only on the first business day of the month.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PUBLIC HEARINGS AND THE PANDEMIC

Open

The directives of public health and social distancing due to the pandemic do not permit any hearings to take place in person. We cannot predict how long these measures will be necessary, but the Law Society must nevertheless continue to fulfil its mandate. For this reason, Council of the Law Society has issued a directive that all hearings will take place by videoconference.

The hearings will be open to the public as usual, but it will be necessary to obtain an invitation, sent by email, to be able to locate and join a hearing. Any person interested in attending a disciplinary hearing must communicate with us at least two business days before the hearing. Please consult the Form 23 – Notice of Hearing.

To assist those who will participate in or attend hearings held by videoconference, Council has also adopted a guideline of best practices. All members of the public who attend hearings held by videoconference must also adhere to these protocols.

It is possible, in particular cases, that a hearing by videoconference would not be appropriate or possible. If the Law Society or a member facing a discipline hearing wishes for a hearing to be held in person, an application must be filed with the Discipline Committee, which will be obligated to render a decision either to permit the hearing by videoconference or to order that the hearing be held in person. This may involve delaying the hearing.
