Procedure for Admission

as Canadian Legal Advisors

Pursuant to the Québec Mobility Agreement, members of the Barreau du Québec and of the Chambre des notaires du Québec who meet the requirements may apply for admissions as Canadian Legal Advisors.

Application Requirements

Lawyers from Québec who wish to be admitted as Canadian Legal Advisors must deliver the following documents to the Executive Director:

  • A completed Form 28, Application for Admission as a Canadian Legal Advisor;
  • Confirmation of good character;
  • Certificate of standing from the Barreau du Québec or from the Chambre des notaires and from the law society or any other jurisdiction in which the applicant is or has been a member;
  • Proof of professional liability insurance that covers all legal work performed in New Brunswick;
  • The prescribed fees;
  • Confirmation that the applicant holds a bachelor's degree in civil law in Canada or a foreign degree certified as equivalent;
  • Any other information that may be required.

Restrictions on Practice

A person admitted in New Brunswick as a Canadian legal advisor may only give legal advice and provide legal services in the cicumstances outlines at section 45.2(1) and 45.2(1.1) of the General Rules under the Law Society Act, 1996.

A Canadian legal advisor must continue to be a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec or the Chambre des notaires du Québec authorized to practse law in that Province. If the Canadian legal advisor ceases to be authorized to practise law in Québec, he shall immediately advise the Executive Director in writing.
